Phlebotomy Courses

Currently there are about 10 agencies in US that offer phlebotomy certification. Even though the certification is only needed by law in 2 states, most employers in US only hire people that have taken a phlebotomist course.

If you are interested in taking a course in phlebotomy, there are many ways you can do this. Phlebotomist courses are available via trade or vocational schools, health facilites and also community colleges.

The courses vary greatly in length and  what is covered during the course. Generally the program lasts from 6 months to 9 months. This would combine both classroom as well as clinical training and instructions. NAACLS, or National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences has listed about 60 schools in US that can offer you these courses.

Several Phlebotomy courses can be done during your other studies or work, as they are part time. The classes themselves focus on various aspects of the human body, anatomy, physiology and even psychology. Phlebotomy Courses will give you an excellent overview on various blood sampling procedures and different techniques used for newborns, elderly or children.

Phlebotomy courses also focus on lab skills and laboratory safety. As this is one of the more important parts of the job, it requires thorough understanding of the lab procedures and even waste disposal and clean up procedures.  If you have not had any medical training before, you may have to also undergo training for CPR or first aid training.

Before you are allowed to graduate and become a certified phlebotomist, you will be given an introduction to legal issues, computer training and even professional behaviour, which will be required when communicating with the patients.

While there may not be a course provider available in your city, phlebotomy coordinators are here to help you find the closest training facility.
